Following on from the successful FORGE 2023, the challenge continues in the stunning surrounds of the Rhymney Valley with its challenging terrain and commanding views.

The start and finish of this years challenge is Idris Davies School.

EXACT ROUTES TO BE CONFIRMED

These are the planned routes for 2023’s challenge series, and could be subject to change. Final routes will be confirmed in your entry pack a week prior to the challenge. If you plan on walking in advance, please note that sections of the routes could be overgrown/Impassable. Rest assured they will be all sorted by the 29th of April.

‘The Wild Boar’ 20-22 mile route

(Self led challenge and Led Walk)

Walk, Jog or Run

This self led 21 mile route will take you through spectacular valleys’, woodland, farmland, hill tops and riverside. Weather permitting; you will be treated to some fantastic views across the county borough towards the Brecon Beacons, over Cardiff Bay, the Bristol Channel, Somerset and North Devon.

Following on from last year: We now have a limited number of places available for a led walk at this distance i.e. ideal for people who are well able for the distance, but cannot read a map!

PLEASE NOTE: the down side of a led walk is that you will be expected to walk at the pace of the group. 

‘The Wild Boar’ 14-16 mile route

(Self led challenge and Led Walk)

Walk, Jog or Run.

15miles of tough terrain.

Following on from last year: We now have a limited number of places available for a led walk at this distance i.e. ideal for people who are well able for the distance, but cannot read a map!

PLEASE NOTE: the down side of a led walk is that you will be expected to walk at the pace of the group.

‘The Wild Boar’ 11 mile ‘Ramblers Cymru’ Challenge

(Led walk – route TBC)

Led Walk.

If you aren’t too hot with map reading and want to challenge yourself without getting lost, then the ramblers Cymru walk will be just the one for you. Enjoy the wonderful scenery of the area whilst being accompanied by an experienced Ramblers Cymru walk leader.  

PS don’t be fooled by the shorter distance… this walk will still pack a punch and involve hills, mud and uneven terrain just like the 2 longer challenges.

‘The Wild Boar’ 1 to 5 mile ‘Lets walk Challenge’

(Led Walk)

If you don’t fancy so many hills, then shorter flatter led walks from 1 to 5 miles might be just what you are looking for. There is a £2 charge for the ‘Lets Walk Cymru’ challenge.  Pre entry or pay on the day, just turn up on the 11th of May at 10.30, register and be ready to walk by 11am.

Approximate Start Times

Exact start times will be confirmed with your information pack. Below will give you a rough idea:

  • 20-22 mile: Registration from 07:00 all walkers to leave by 7:30.
  • 14-16 mile: Registration from 08:00 all walkers to leave by 8:30.
  • 9-11 mile led walk: Registration from 9am, all walkers to leave by 09.30.
  • 1-5 mile walk led walk: Registration from 10.30, walk start at 11am.

Important Information

  • You should choose a route that is suitable for your own personal level of fitness. Shorter routes don’t mean easy walking/running.
  • A descriptive route card will be sent out (digitally) with your information pack, this route card will give grid references for key points or features, the type of terrain to be covered and an estimate of the time you should allow, based on the Naismith Formula. 
  • Individual entrants should be competent in map reading and route finding.
  • Team entrants should have at least one person in their group that is competent in map reading and route finding.
